Government of Canada invests in stronger air connectivity in Norman Wells and Fort Simpson

Canada NewsWire

NORMAN WELLS, NT , Oct. 15, 2026 /CNW/ -- Canadians, travellers, tourists and businesses count every day on local and regional airports. These vital hubs help move people and goods, strengthen supply chains, and link communities across our vast country from coast to coast to coast.

Today, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, Minister of Transport and the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, announced that the Government of Canada is strengthening air safety and connectivity in the Northwest Territories.

Through the Airports Capital Assistance Program, the Government of Canada is providing $1.4 million in funding to support critical snow and ice control operations at two Northwest Territories airports. This includes $810,000 for the purchase of a snow blower at the Norman Wells Airport and $595,000 for the purchase of a grader at the Fort Simpson Airport.

These specialized vehicles will be used in the removal and control of snow and ice on airside surfaces such as runways, taxiways and aprons. The funding will enhance airport safety and reliability, helping ensure these airports can continue providing safe and efficient air transportation services for passengers, air operators and the communities they serve.

Strengthening the resilience of air transportation in the Northwest Territories helps keep northern communities connected year-round and supports the movement of people, goods and essential services.
